Find out more about the RESTORE study and if it can help you
What is the RESTORE study?
RESTORE is a study using an endoscopic treatment for patients with Type 2 Diabetes (T2D). You may find it difficult to control your blood sugar level using tablets and weekly injections. This study is for patients who are not yet on insulin.
Can you help us find out if there is an alternative way to help manage your diabetes? We are recruiting volunteers like yourself for this study.
What is the RESTORE procedure?
The RESTORE study procedure is performed using an endoscope. An endoscope is a thin tube with a camera at the tip that is used to look inside the body. After giving you medication to help you go into a deep sleep, the endoscope is passed through the mouth, into the stomach and then into the duodenum. The duodenum is the part of the small intestine that is located just past the stomach. A small catheter attached to the endoscope is used to deliver small electrical pulses to the duodenum. The procedure can take up to 1 hour. Most patients can return to work within 1-2 days. If you need medical certification for work, we can arrange that for you. One month after your treatment, the physician will take a look back with the endoscope to make sure everything has healed up in your intestine.
Can you participate in the study?
Yes – if you tick all these boxes:
Type 2 Diabetes
Blood sugar level not adequately controlled.
Not using insulin currently
Taking 2–4 diabetes medications
Age between 22 and 70 years
HbA1C level between 7.1% and 10%
Body mass index (BMI) between 22 and 45
Why It Helps
Some cells in the lining of the duodenum are important for blood sugar control. Treatments targeting the duodenum were shown to improve Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) control in patients like yourself.
Footscray Hospital, part of Western Health in Melbourne, is actively recruiting participants for the RESTORE study. Please speak to your doctor or diabetes educator to learn more about the study and to see if you can participate.

What will happen while I am involved in RESTORE the study?
You will need a medical consultation with the study team and some tests such as a blood test to confirm you can participate. Once this screening process is done, we can confirm if you are suitable. Once confirmed, we can schedule you for the study procedure.
Is there a cost to participate in the RESTORE study?
There is no cost.
All procedures, tests and supplies are provided at zero cost
Why should I participate in the RESTORE study?
• Priority access to an expert medical team that will care for you throughout the whole study period.
• Access to a new and possibly effective treatment for T2D that is only available to those participating in the study.
• You may learn more about your diabetes condition and feel like you are taking a more active role in improving your health.
What happens after my RESTORE procedure?
• Most patients will go home the same day, but some may stay overnight in hospital.
• You may experience a small amount of abdominal discomfort, but it should resolve quickly.
• Most patients can return to normal activities the day after treatment.
• A special diet will be required for the first few days after the procedure to allow the duodenum to heal well.
• You will receive a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) but you will also be asked to keep track of your blood sugar levels.
